About Folding Rock
Folding Rock is a new magazine publishing the very best creative prose from Wales – and beyond. The inaugural issue, "Roots", will be published in March 2025. Learn more and pre-order here.
A Note from Kathryn:
Roots can take hold in myriad ways: in the places we are born, the ones we come from, and those we learn to call home. They bind us to our histories, our environment, and the people who surround us. Our roots embroider the bedrock of everything we do – for better or worse. They are the vessels that feed our future.
Our new magazine, Folding Rock, is laying its own first roots as a publication. The inaugural issue comes out in less than a month, and in it writers both new and established explore the shape and curious spread of life's foundations. From childhood reflections to creeping forests, each piece has interpreted this theme of 'roots' in an entirely different way.
And so, with all the hope and ambition of this new magazine in mind, I'd love to see is how you might take this theme - this foundation - and do something unexpected with it. Rather than write the obvious, tune into your creative instincts: use your imagination. Follow that thread in whatever unusual direction it wants to go, and push yourself to write the kind of piece you never have before. Gather up everything you've learnt so far - your experiences, stories, writerly wisdom - and weave into something new. The soil is fresh and ready for growth... so be brave! Make it something worthwhile. That's exactly what we'll be doing in these first exciting steps for Folding Rock.
Tip: See if you can avoid the word 'roots' altogether when you write your piece. You don't actually need it - trust me.

Glad I found you all and looking forward to reading everyone's stories that come out of this! Heads up - there seems to be an inconsistency in the prizes shown here and in Submittable. Submittable shows $100 USD, but here it says $65 USD.
I absolutely like your posts. Impressive
