Oh, this takes me back to those Sunday lunches growing up. We were 4 generations under one roof, and this piece clinked beautifully with those body-memories of sitting together, feeling so full of food and family, scarpetta (of course), and the usual bickering about who got to wash the dishes. So much nostalgia. Thank you, Oli, for the time travel.
What great imagery! The color of the terracotta, the laughter in the air, that feeling of warmth from your family. It was amazing. No wonder it won First Place!
Beautiful.piece! In Bengali there is a term which goes like this - Chachi Puchi Khaaye Je- Raja Moshai Hoye Shei. Translates to - the one who eats the last of the dish scraping the pot will become king. Typically uttered when children are fed the last morsel. Your writing was so evocative - I could see the faces, hear the laughter and the creak of the chairs. Congratulations on your prize.
too pleasant , cant be a real Italian family, where is the drama, jealousy, generations of hatred, arguing over money, domestic violence, abuse, patriarchy?
Thanks so much!
Any opportunity to write about the importance of food, coming together, and hospitality is an absolute privilege and this was a real joy to write
